Doctor Julian Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik

Doctor Ivo Robotnik (イヴォ・ロボトニック, Ivo Robotonikku), better known by the alias "Dr. Eggman" (ドクター・エッグマン, Dokutā Egguman), is the main antagonist from the Sonic Pokémon series created by Yuji Naka and Satoshi Tajiri. He is a Overlander and the arch-nemesis of Sonic the Hedgehog . This large scientist with an IQ of 300 whose primary ambition is universal domination. Dreaming of conquer and ruling the entire world, he constantly seeks to create his Eggman Empire, spread it across the globe, and reshape it.

While the doctor's plans initially consisted of building incredible armies by using animals as power sources for his robots and using them to dominate the land, Dr. Eggman's schemes have since branched into much more global threats as he built war machines, used nuclear devices to threaten entire nations, and even relied on mythological and ancient deities bent on destruction to achieve his goals. Eventually, the mad scientist has gone as far as to target the entire universe and cooked up schemes to control time and space itself.

With the aid of his army, robots, and airships, Dr. Eggman has time and time again proven a formidable foe and persistent force, despite his constant losses and various plots for world domination are always thwarted by at the hands of his most hated enemy, Tom or Sonic, and their many allies.

While all these plans end in failure thanks to the continued efforts of the Resistance, the mad doctor is somehow always able to slip away from certain death or imprisonment and escape at the last moment, making him a constant threat to the universe and a thorn in Sonic's side. He is aided in his schemes by his sidekick robots, Decoe and Bocoe, his nephew Snively, as well as his messenger Bokkun and his arsenal of ruthless robots and high-tech terrornauts.

"My name is Dr. Eggman and I have some exciting news for you. Exciting for me, that is, and catastrophic for you. I have decided to take over your world and make it part of the new Eggman Empire! Resistance is futile. You will submit to my rule or be swept away like dust bodies!"

—Dr. Eggman.

Younger[]

Dr. Robotnik is a Overlander with a round head with a huge mustache, a large, round body, thick arms and long legs. He has pince-nez glasses with blue tinted lenses. He wears a red jacket with golden wrist buttons on each and he has a small yellow cape with a triangular collar that stretches down to the edge of his pants in the front. He is also seen to have black, form-fitting one-piece boots with two buttons in front.

Robotnik is also seen to have his wedding outfit in any case. It is bright cyan colored wedding apparel with a large purple bow tie, yellow buttons on the wrists and one on the jacket, a white shirt and a black cape which goes behind his back, similar to his traditional yellow cape.

Teen Years[]

As a teenager, Robotnik's appearance was largely the same, with the exception of having facial pimples and a small bowl haircut with dark orange hair.

AOSTH Saga[]

Dr. Robotnik is a comically obese Overlander with a ragged orange mustache, a conical head, a drooping pink nose, black eyes with red irises and black pupils, a round body and wiry legs. He wears a red, black and yellow bodysuit, gray tights and a pair of gray gloves with metal gauntlets. Very rarely, Robotnik also wears a yellow cape to go along with his regular attire.

Robotnik's other outfits include a bathrobe with a fez, a military dictator's uniform with a corset to thin his appearance, a submarine commander's uniform, and various historical uniforms as a result of traveling through time.

SatAM Saga[]

Robotnik is a tall Overlander of imposing girth with a light complexion. He possesses a bald, conical head, a dark orange and long mustache under his nose and black eyes with red irises. Robotnik is also partially roboticized, resulting in his left arm from the shoulder and down to be completely robotic. Also, in the place of his ears, he has small metallic stubs.

Strangely enough, Robotnik is also shown to have five uvulas and a hairy tongue, and contrary to their normal, white appearance, his teeth are borderline brown and yellow, with his mouth big enough to house Snively's head.

Robotnik's usual attire consists of a jumpsuit that is red above the waist and black below, with yellow lines spanning up, down and around his body; grey leggings; black-and-red boots; wide, red shoulder pads; a black sleeve on his human arm; a yellow cape; and grey gloves. But while head of the War Ministry, prior to his coup, Robotnik wore a white militaristic uniform with blue chains across the front, black-and-red epaulets, medals on the left side of his breast and a bearskin hat.

Rise of Lyric Saga[]

Eggman is depicted as being a rotund Overlander in appearance, whose torso is shaped like an egg (like his name implies), albeit an upside-down egg. He possesses pale peach skin and has been noted to be overweight. He also possesses a dome-shaped head and no visible neck, a bald head, a bright red and big nose, small round ears, and a very smooth, yet wide, brown moustache. He also has smooth, yet still broad shoulder, and thick arms. He also has slightly short legs by comparison to the rest of his body and relatively small feet. Supposedly, Eggman's head was once full of hair, but he has since gone bald over the years. He was also born with a vestigial tail, but had it removed years ago.

Eggman's usual attire consists of militaristic garments. He wears a red jacket with yellow cuffs, a front flap attached to one of the buttons and two flap hanging from the back, blue pince-nez glasses, white gloves, a set of grey goggles with flappable green lenses, grey pants and a pair of black boots with high rims. On his right wrist he has his wrist controller.

In addition to his usual clothes, Eggman has a number of additional attires:

  • For sleeping or otherwise slouching, Eggman wears a pink pajamas with feet, which has the Eggman Industries' symbol on the front and a trapdoor on the rear.
  • For rainy weathers, Eggman wears an overcoat.
  • When exercising or conducting other physical workouts, Eggman wears a red fitness vest with black shorts, a yellow belt, grey running shoes, and grey socks.
  • For mornings or when feeling glum, Eggman sometimes wears a red morning robe with yellow edges.
  • For beach trips or sunbathing, Eggman has a striped old-fashioned diving suit in two color schemes: red and white, or black and white.
  • For covert thefts, Eggman has a black bodysuit with a white version of the Eggman Industries' symbol on the front, black shoes, and a black burglar cap.
  • During his graduation, Eggman wore a purple robe and a black square academic cap.
  • While Eggman had the Froglodytes as his servants, he wore a fur cape and a skull hat with long horns in addition to his regular attire.
  • For vacations, Eggman has a blue and white Hawaiian shirt.
  • During the Eggtoberfest, Eggman wore green lederhosen with a yellow shirt, white shocks, brown shoes, and a brown fedora with a red feather.
  • On holidays, Eggman has been known to wear a red and white Santa Hat, a fake white beard and fake white eyebrows. In addition, he wears a variant of his jacket with white fur edges on the front and bottom, black cuffs, white insides, and a red-striped frontal flap.

Pre-Present Saga[]

Originally, Eggman was identical to Robotnik Prime, save the black/blue appearance due to being roboticized. After the loss of his first robotic body, he settled for a more streamlined design. Tall even for an Overlander, Eggman remained obese but became somewhat burlier and less flabby with long, almost disproportionately thin arms and legs. His head is now round as opposed to pointy adorned with both tinted glasses and goggles, and his moustache greatly grew in length, density and mass. He now wears an elegant, red coat sporting two square metal buttons on both sides of the chest in gold with white stripes and yellow cuffs on the sleeves with white gloves covering his hands, and a pair of black pants with matching boots seemingly attached to them bearing circular plates on the both sides of the ankles and three square ones riding up the shin. It was later revealed that behind his pince-nez glasses were the same black eyes with red irises of his original flesh and blood form.

Robotnik was a tall Overlander of imposing girth with a shaven head, dark orange mustache, and black eyes with crimson irises. His usual attire was a sleeveless, red jumpsuit with yellow lines spanning up, down, and around his body, wide shoulder pads, a yellow cape, and gray boots. On multiple occasions in his career he donned a militaristic uniform consisting of a red coat, smaller shoulder pads, and gray pants. It was in this outfit he confronted the Original Freedom Fighters and led his Combot Army. Robotnik was also partially Roboticized, resulting in his left arm from the shoulder and down to be completely robotic.

Robotnik's Terror Saga[]

In his first appearances, Robotnik was had a rotund torso and thin and long arms and legs. At this point, his eyes were completely dark and showed no pupils. He wore a red top with a short yellow cape, attached to his shoulders by a triangular collar; black pants with attached boots and a pair of large silver buttons on the front; and white globes. However, this outfit has changed over time, with the most common one becoming a red, black and yellow bodysuit, grey tights and a pair of grey gloves with metal gauntlets.

After rehatching, Robotnik got a different look. His moustache was more ragged and orange in colour, his head was conical-shaped, his torso had an egg-like shape, and his arms and legs became shorter and wider. In addition, his eyes would look cojoined and have small, red pupils. His attire consisted on the same bodysuit he wore before his transformation.

Eventually, Robotnik would gain a new look. Currently, he has become somewhat taller and burlier, while his head is round-shaped again. For attire, he wears a red coat sporting two yellow, square metal buttons on both sides of the chest with white stripes and yellow cuffs on the sleeves; white gloves; and black pants with matching boots seemingly attached to them bearing circular plates on the both sides of the ankles and three square buttons riding up the shin.

Present[]

In the present day, Eggman remains obese, but has become somewhat burlier, taller and less flabby with long, almost disproportionately thin arms and legs.

For attire, Eggman wears tinted, navy blue pince-nez glasses and green-lensed goggles as headwear and an elegant, red coat sporting two square metal buttons on both sides of the chest in gold. These buttons have white straps that run across the coat's sides to identical buttons on the back. The coat also has silver, zipper-like linings down the back, arms and front, yellow cuffs, and two extensions on the front that have large silver buttons. In addition, Eggman also wears white, cuff-less gloves on his hands and a pair of black pants with matching boots seemingly attached to them bearing circular plates on the both sides of the ankles and three square ones riding up the shin.

After losing his memory and gaining the new alias "Mr. Tinker", Eggman began to wear green overalls, a pink shirt, and pink and green slippers.

Working For Paramount[]

Dr. Robotnik is an average-sized Overlander. He originally possessed dark brown (almost black) hair, light peach skin, brown eyes, a short mustache and ample stubble across his jawline. His hair was usually combed back, and his mustache was usually thin and dark brown (almost black) with handlebar curls at the ends. For attire, he usually wore a black trench coat with customized tails and red piping, a dark grey tunic, black trousers, black shoes, black gloves and black sunglasses. When later piloting his Eggpod, he donned a red flight suit with black and brown accents and black goggles with red lenses.

After spending nearly three months alone on the Mushroom Planet, Dr. Robotnik adopted a significantly different appearance: he shaved his head completely bald, he let his mustache become overgrown, unkempt, and more mahogany in color, his nose gained a notable pinkish-red sunburn, and the sleeves of his flight suit had been torn off.

Background[]

Personality[]

Overall[]

He has built immense warships, such as the Death Egg and the Egg Carrier, as well as escape units such as the Egg Mobile. In fact, his most famous machine is an Egg Mobile with a wrecking ball attached to the bottom, which (even though it retains its spherical shape), it remodeled to have small red wings. There is also a long spike at the bottom that is surrounded by a circle shaped hole, both were made for reasons although they could be used as how it retains flight as there are no thrusters on the future Egg Mobile. Missiles are located in the body of the craft istead of being released by accessories. His plans to create the ultimate utopia, the Eggman Empire, are always in full swing, and he doesn't care where to start it -- in the end, he plans for it to encompass all of the world. His abominable laughter and maniacal declarations contrast his self-professed softer side as a romanticist, feminist, and gentleman. Despite his and Sonic's constant feud, he has secretly developed a begrudging respect for the hedgehog. Although Eggman is a villain, he helps Sonic and co. when the world is at stake, not wanting to think what would happen to the world.

Games[]

Dr. Eggman is a short-tempered, raucous, pompous, and cruel Overlander who is constantly trying to take over the world. Said to be the world's most evil and vindictive, as well as its worst screw-up, his primary motivations most of the time are the ridiculous delusions of grandeur he suffers and his psychotic belief that the world will be a better place under his rule. He uses his scientific genius and robotic expertise to create weapons and gadgets in his bid to conquer the world and establish his Eggman Empire. While his views of the world cannot be understood by normal people, he believes that an enslaved planet filled with machines under his rule, which is embodied in the form of Eggmanland, is the ultimate utopia.

Eggman is noted for being extremedly narcissistic and egotistical, having done all of his actions only for his own benefits. Most of his bases and creations have his own face and name on them, which has sometimes turned up against him; at the start of the Little Planet incident, he chained Little Planet to a mountain with his own face sculpted on it, which led to Sonic suspecting that the doctor was behind this immediately after seeing the mountain. His narcissism is such that when he first discovered the Phantom Ruby, it showed his deepest desire in the form of a complete Eggmanland with various labels of his names and statues to himself.

Possesing no empathy or care for others, Eggman puts his own welldoing and necessities over anybody else's, even ignoring his allies when revealing himself and giving all the credit to himself instead. If the doctor worries about others, it will almost always be for his own benefits, usually resulting in short alliances. As such, he is willing to abandon his allies if they have served their purpose; a notable example was during the Angel Island incident, where he tricked Knuckles to cooperate with him and later stole the Master Emerald from him to power his Death Egg. It is also implied by Orbot that Eggman does not care about the wellfare of his own minions and treats them badly. This is best illustrated during the Chaos incident, where Eggman got rid of most of the E-100 Series robots when they were unable to satisfy him, referring to them as "worthless hunks of junk".

Despite his intelligence, Eggman can be very immature, which is said to be the cause of his obsession with world domination. This childish behavior makes him believe that taking over the world can be easy. He is also often prone to throw emotional and childish outbursts when Sonic manages to wreck his plans. His immaturity is usually best displayed whenever he gets insulted or when his plans begin to break apart when victory was previously assured. This, combined with his narcissism, makes Eggman tend to overestimate his abilities, overlooking crucial details in his plans and underestimating his enemies' chances of winning. Because of this, he can be very blind whenever he believes he has the upper hand, celebrating too early before he has completely overpowered his enemies. Such was the case when he ignored Dark Gaia's immature release from the planet and got rid of the Chaos Emeralds alongside Sonic during that incident, which led to his plans progressing much slower than planned and giving Sonic the needed resources and time to defeat him; even then, Eggman refused to listen to the consequences of the poor execution of his own planning, simply complaining about his bad luck and saying that he just "wanted a challenge" instead. In fact, Eggman has gained somewhat of a reputation for screwing up at his plans, even when he has all the chances of winning with him. Similarly, it was stated that, despite being convinced that he has a master plan, he is never actually sure how to pull it off.

Behind his immaturity, Eggman can be very serious and threatening. However, he shows this side very rarely, usually when extremely aggravated or during very serious situations. Under this pressure, he often attempts to intimidate his opponents by death threatening them. Notable instances of this include the Chaos incident, where he threatened Tails while barely even raising his voice after the fox cub had foiled his attempt to destroy Station Square; and the Lost Hex incident, where he, after being taunted by the Deadly Six about the impending destruction of the world, threatened them in an even-handed manner to destroy everything they desired before smashing the ice-block communication set they were using and retaining this tone when telling Orbot his hands were okay from smashing the ice blocks so long as he could strangle a Zeti with them. On a similar note, he was also shown to possess a rather bleak and cruel sense of humor, even joyfully narrating the dangers his interstellar amusement park possessed during the Wisp incident. Similarly, in his propaganda video "Come Join the Eggman Empire" during the War to Take Back the Planet, he happily said that living in an area filled with pollution is a lot better than in one with clean air, especially after a Robotomy Treatment that saps its citizens of their ability to eat, sleep, and think ever again; which he claimed to be the "good life."

Eggman stands out with his passion and love of robotics and machines in general, which he puts over anything else in life. In fact, his fondness for them reaches the point where his definition of a perfect world is a planet with nothing but machinery. He believes that machines look beautiful, and likes the fact that he is able to control them to his will. Because of this, Eggman always tries to replace all nature in the world with his machinery, even standing by his conviction that living in a heavily industrialized and polluted place is a better alternative to living in one with clean air. A notorious polluter, he does not care about the damage he does to the environment and loves in particular to overexploit the natural resources of the planet.

Eggman has never shown a willingness to do good or help others without it serving his own ends in some way. While sometimes displaying a comical disposition, he is still a cruel minded and brutal man who will use any opportunity presented to him to fuel his self-serving desires, even exploiting worldwide catastrophes to obtain power and dominance. Eggman's numerous crimes and exploits continuously transition into more destructive ramifications. Not caring about the consequences of his operations over the world's residents, Eggman is even willing to destroy entire lands if he can gain something from it; notably, during the Lost Hex incident, he was willing destroy the entirety of the Lost Hex to get rid of the Deadly Six, despite Sonic saying that doing so would cause the Animals on the continent to die, to which Eggman implied that "some sacrifices would be necessary". On a similar note, it was also implied that part of the reason he recruited Infinite and his Jackal Squad was due to him being genuinely impressed with the mercenary's innate desire to cause the world to become war-torn after seeing his vision via the Phantom Ruby. Though very rarely, Eggman is even willing to make suicide attacks as a twisted form of revenge; during the Chaos incident, he launched a missile deep into the heart of a heavily populated Station Square to utterly destroy it, even if that meant killing himself in the process, after Sonic and his friends caused his plans to use Chaos to dominate the planet failed. However, he appears to be blind about the catastrophes he causes, believing that these are actually good works of his for the well being of mankind and animals alike, and that he intends to make the world a better place.

Despite his desire for world domination, Eggman does, somehow, have a Overlander side in his personality, as he is not necessarily "evil" and does not appreciate senseless destruction, tormenting and killing from other individuals and forces who are beyond his control. During the Black Arms incident in particular, he was shown to be disgusted and shocked at the thought that his own grandfather would sacrifice his own people for the sake of research and aid the Black Arms. His more Overlander side was shown in full force at the end of the Space Colony ARK incident, where he had an honest and genuine conversation with Tails about how much he adored his grandfather, questioning the actions of his fallen idol and wondering if he intended to destroy him as well.

That said, however, Eggman seems to have no problem in committing senseless killing and destruction as long as he is the one in control of the forces doing so. The doctor is so bent on authority, that he refuses to let others destroy his planet outside his direction. This was best shown when Chaos betrayed Eggman and flooded all of Station Square, an action that Eggman had planned Chaos to do from the very beginning regardless of the beast's betrayal against him, but refused to allow his rampage to continue aimlessly. Also, during the Lost Hex incident, Eggman was content with conquering what was left of the world after the Deadly Six's actions, supporting that he does not care what condition the world is in as long as he is the one ruling it. Likewise, he is also not tolerant in destruction if it is done by a third party, especially if it interferes with his own goals of building his Eggman Empire. This was especially evident during the Black Arms incident, where Eggman considered the Black Arms to be a prime threat that could interrupt his plans. Eggman's sudden changes of heart from time to time have even confused individuals like Sonic; during the Lost Hex incident, when the doctor unhesitantingly saved Tails from a Crabmeat-controlled Cubot, Sonic asked him why he would do that, to which Eggman replied that he was "a complicated guy".

One of Eggman's more admirable traits is his courage throughout life threatening situations. The doctor always shows considerable bravery and very rarely shows fear, regardless of who or what he is facing. His persistence to control other creatures bent on mass destruction and approach them to ultimately tame them, including Chaos and Dark Gaia, also illustrate his apparent lack of fear. This can be owed partially to the fact that he has previously shown a disregard for even his own life on several occasions, as long as his plans come to full fruition. However, if he is caught without any backup plan to fall on, he is not above fleeing, such as when the Deadly Six took over his army after Sonic kicked away his Cacophonic Conch. Ne also possesses a strong confidence and an absolute refusal to give up, which can be considered one of his strongest points; despite his constant defeats, he is never discouraged by them and does not let them stop him.

Ultimately, while not openly violent and ruthless, Eggman is still a highly brutal and amoral villain with an insatiable lust for power, dominance, and, since meeting Sonic, revenge. While still harboring a more humane side and displaying comical undertones, Eggman's ruthless and violent nature can still be seen throughout the series. His uncompromising persistence shared with his appetite for authority and control fuel the conflicts throughout the entire series and guarantee that Sonic will always be needed to stop him.

Pre-Comics[]

Being stated on several occasions as being many times more nasty and evil than the original Robotnik ever was, Eggman has shown himself to be far more prone to toying with his opponents than his Mobius Prime counterpart on numerous occasions. As opposed to simply wiping out Knothole from the get-go, Eggman decided to "have fun" with his Mobian enemies and take the time and resources to engage in "war-games". Eventually he grew tired of this, and decided to use the Mobians as a source of fuel for his capital city via the Egg Grape Chambers. When his mechanical "daughter" Mecha asked if there was not a far more efficient and easier method to powering his city, Eggman responded with a nonchalant "Where would the fun in that be?".

Like Robotnik, Eggman is also arrogant, and egotistical, both of which may be his greatest weaknesses. He has a habit of frequently putting "Egg" into the names of numerous inventions and places (Egg Fleet, Egg Pawn, Egg Lobster, and Egg Grape Chamber to name a few). He has also stated that Ixis Naugus is the reason why he likes science more than magic.

Despite his genius, Eggman has the annoying habit of thinking that his plans are foolproof, even when the flaws are quite obvious (Metal Scourge done on the fly, Egg Grapes needing retooling for Enerjak, telling Dimitri about the explosives, etc.), and not realizing that there may be a problem until it is too late, and at one point of desperation, he even ordered his Egg Fleet to fire on his enemies while he was standing right next to them without concern for his own well being.

Following the destruction of his entire city, the loss of 99% of his forces, the betrayal and subsequent deaths of his "children", and his never ending litany of defeats at the hands of Sonic and the Freedom Fighters, Eggman began to fall apart mentally, frequently ranting utter nonsense to everyone and no one in particular, not bothering to think things through, and suffering sporadic memory loss (such as when he referred to Snively as "Colin" and the Dark Egg Legion as the "Dark Alliance"). In one instance, he was perfectly willing to use a super-weapon that would destroy not only the Freedom Fighters, but also half of the Eggdome and everyone in it at the time, simply to finally get rid of Sonic, which Shadow and Rouge both noted as proof that Eggman was losing all grip on reality (though Sonic refused to believe it until he witnessed the doctor's breakdown with his own eyes). Yet another subsequent defeat at Sonic's hands finally drove Eggman completely insane, up to the point where he was unable to differentiate between events that occurred ten minutes ago from those that occurred ten years ago (for example, he used the Egg Tortoise to search for Knothole long after he himself destroyed it). However, he did experience a moment of clarity while in conversation with an irate Chuck Hedgehog. From thereon, Eggman's senses gradually returned to him.

Shortly before the Iron Dominion's defeat, Eggman had, as Snively put it, "reasoned [himself] back from the brink." After the Dominion's fall and his subsequent return to the EggDome, Eggman had seemingly regained most of his sanity, though still displaying slightly more prominent mood swings than before.

Comics[]

Robotnik was cruel, sadistic, cantankerous, narcissistic Overlander, ruthless and very egotistical. He had been known to design machines that look like his face, examples including Robostorm, the Death Egg, and numerous ships. He hated to do harm to that which bears his image. Robotnik loathed the notion of additional megalomaniacs in his domain, constantly belittling his nephew Snively. Additionally, he preferred polluted environments over forests. When Car-Heem attempted to study Robotnik, Sonic and others in a replica of the Great Forest, Robotnik could not stand being in a non-toxic environment. He also has a pathological fear of the jungle and is afraid of heights.

Post-Comics[]

Dr. Eggman is misanthropic, xenophobic, and a passionate technophobe. Meeting the criteria of a classic sociopath, Eggman cares for no one apart from himself and his machines. He will happily stab anyone in the back once they have outlived their usefulness or use them for his personal gain without thinking about it twice. He is the ruthless and megalomaniacal ruler of the Eggman Empire. He is a power-hungry tyrant who believes that his superior intellect makes him the rightful ruler of the world, a view which makes him incredibly arrogant and gives him a psychotic sense of self-entitlement that urges him to not just rule over the planet, but over the entire universe as well. Eggman is a strict man of science and technology, and has little care for the environment, magic, plant life or other living creatures, preferring to have his territories be completely dominated by factories and machinery with no sign of natural elements. His ultimate goal is to turn the world into his ideal robotic empire which he has dubbed "Eggman Land" and is determined to cause as much chaos and destruction to achieve this goal.

Eggman is a manipulative individual who will do whatever it takes to further his plans and will gladly take control over the minds of mobians, humans, or even divine beings against their will all for the sake of achieving his goals without caring about the harm he does to them or the world. His uncaring personality is mostly due to his over-inflated ego, as he only views himself and his machinery with utmost pride; the only other individual Eggman has ever admired is his grandfather Gerald Robotnik, whose life would play a major role in influencing Eggman's views. Eggman has no problem boasting about his superior intellect and mastery of science, often making long-winded proclamations about his superiority and looking down on anyone who would disagree. While Eggman's overly prideful views are the core parts of his personality, they are also his greatest weakness, as they cause him to become far too overconfident and arrogant when facing those who challenge his attempts at world domination and it usually leads to his downfall.

Eggman's psychotic mentality makes him a very dangerous man, but it also seems to make him somewhat eccentric and he often acts like an immature and short-tempered blowhard, especially when things do not go his way. Nonetheless, he is still a cruel and conniving individual under the right circumstances, and when he has complete control over the situation, and his plans go accordingly he prefers to toy with his enemies rather than finish them off from the start, but this arrogance as mentioned before is what usually leads to his own downfall. Eggman has a peculiar fascination with the word "Egg", having given himself the name "Eggman" and giving many of his creations egg-themed names and appearances, such as the Egg Fleet, the Egg Pawns, the Death Egg, and the Egg Mobile.

According to Breezie, Eggman hates the idea of his robots fighting each other.

Anime[]

Dr. Eggman is a power-hungry megalomaniac who wants to conquer the world. Despite having a few evil moments in the series, this version of Eggman is considerably more lucid and overall sympathetic than most other continuities. Clearly not having problems with kidnapping and threatening to inflict harm, he does, however, think it is too far to actually hurt people and dislikes to harm humans and animals alike; for example, when the Metarex begin to beat up a captive Chris and Cosmo, Eggman criticized them for their malicious behavior towards the two. Earlier in the series, when the Eggsterminator was brutally beating Sonic, Eggman could not bear to watch and even ordered the robot to stop and give Sonic a break. He also seems to have a degree of respect and even care for Sonic and his attitude, as in "Testing Time", not only does Eggman comes to Sonic's rescue, but he shows no fear from Sonic's dark transformation, and actually is the one to talk him down from said state, showing genuine disappointment at his nemesis for acting so violently.

In contrast, he seems more flamboyant than most of his other counterparts, as he is frequently seen showing off, although he retains some of his normal version's personality, such as his immaturity. Eggman has a tendency to sometimes make egg-related puns, such as “egg-cellent” or “egg-ceptional”. He also appears to be a fan of baseball, as seen in Unfair Ball, where he makes the main characters play a baseball game against him and his team for a Chaos Emerald.

Cartoon[]

Dr. Robotnik is a sinister, egotistical, and sadistic Overlander, who enjoys the pain and suffering of other people. As an example, he is perfectly willing to get rid of villages, trains and even entire countries in order to carry out his plans. Raised to always lie, Robotnik likes to trick and betray other people in order to get what he wants. He also does not mind the idea of Mobius being destroyed if this also involves taking Sonic to his doom, and if both happen, he will not think twice about finding other planets to conquer.

Dr. Robotnik is a very rude Overlander, showing a notable lack of sense of honor and empathy. He often forces other people to do whatever he wants, usually by turning them into his slaves and/or forcing them to hand over their possessions over to him, no matter the situation. An incredibly short-tempered person, he also hates being disrespected, and the consequences for the people who insult him involve imprisonment, slavery, etc. He would even go as far as to take a young boy to a robotic factory to make him his slave. In addition, he abuses those who are against him both emotionally and physically. Robotnik is also well known for being very vengeful; he kidnapped Lucas and left him trapped in his fortress for thirty years just because he won over the doctor's love interest, Lucinda, in High School. However, he is usually nice and polite to well-known villains that inhabit other galaxies; a notable example is Giovanni, an intergalactic pokemon snatcher boss that did not receive any kind of hostility from Robotnik when he visited Mobius. He likewise respects his mother, Momma Robotnik, the only person he actually fears. He also prefers to forget about past incidents and instead focus in the present, often joining other people that betrayed him in the past.

Robotnik is shown to be openly obsessed with eggs, which is the only thing he usually eats. He also incorporates egg-themes into many of his inventions. Even his bedroom is egg-themed with his bed being half a broken egg with a yolk-colored cover. It is also said that he has been eating eggs for breakfast every day for the past ten years. Nevertheless, Robotnik has admitted that he also likes strawberry pie.

Robotnik can be very immature, throwing temper tantrums when Sonic manages to wreck into his plans, often screaming "I hate that hedgehog!" when he is defeated. This can also result in him even crying and doing some childish stuff, which usually just ends in Sonic insulting him from afar.

While not openly violent and ruthless, Robotnik is still a highly brutal and amoral villain with an insatiable lust for power, dominance, and, since meeting Lucas, revenge. While still harboring a more Overlander side and displaying comical undertones, Robotnik's ruthless and violent nature can still be seen throughout his constant plots. His uncompromising persistence shared with his appetite for authority and control fuel the conflicts across Mobius and guarantee that Sonic will always be needed to stop him.

Post-Cartoon[]

Robotnik is a cruel, sadistic, despicable, cantankerous, ruthless, and egotistical Overlander. He has a relatively short temper, causing him to have fits of angry childish outbursts when his plans do not succeed. In such situations, he is prone to unload his aggression on those around him (usually on Snively). He also does not hesitate to invoke physical harm on others when he is in a foul mood or angry. He also hates insults and the way Snively talks about him behind his back.

Robotnik is often brash and overconfident with his designs. The personal grudge he holds against Sonic frequently clouds his better judgment. This is shown when he took the chance to fire a missile at Sonic even though his escape pod was short on fuel and if he had fired the missile, he would have crashed (but the missile did not fire because of circuitry damage). However, he is still very a repulsive character, and is not above lying and backstabbing others to accomplish his goals. When talking, he speaks in a very sinister tone.

Robotnik is generally cruel, sardonic, and calculating Overlander. He similarly lacks any redeeming qualities, being generally depicted as a completely repulsive and irredeemable fiend. Like the typical despot, all Robotnik wants is power, his desire being for everything on Mobius to obey only him and to control all that is alive, robotic or otherwise. He is likewise utterly ruthless and relentless in his quest for unquestioned dominance, and takes absolute glee in terrorizing his enemies and sadistically toying with them before moving in to finish them off.

Robotnik is incredibly vain and has an extremely narcissistic and self-absorbed personality. He is even unwilling to even share power with his nephew, Snively, despite the latter only wanting to be co-dominant to Robotnik and not above him, showing that Robotnik cannot tolerate the vicinity of any being who is equal to himself. He desires the company of robots and psychologically battered down psychophonetic like Snively.

Having no respect or care for the ecosystem or environment, Robotnik thrives in polluted environments. Noticeably, he was very pleased by the exhaust fumes and pollutants that he was supposed to spread across the whole world. In fact, Robotnik seems to hate anything that is organic and alive (with the exception of himself), with his ultimate goal being to wipe out everything alive on Mobius. Even when dealing with his family, Robotnik is shown to be abusive and brutal, as displayed by his treatment of Snively.

Pre-Cartoon[]

Dr. Robotnik is a harsh and sinister being. He holds no consideration for anyone but himself, using fear to control the population; he has even assumed that, if people were happy during a dictatorship, there would be no fun in that. He also shows very little care for natural environments, destroying the natural life and replacing the once beautiful lands with polluted wastelands. He is also a very strict man, executing anyone who is anything but a totally useful and loyal servant, harshly executing lazy mobians and destroying all Badniks who failed to capture Sonic by brutally melting them down into metal for bigger, better Badniks.

In addition to his evil personality, Robotnik is a brilliant mechanic, building all sorts of robots, and devices. His mind and ambition ever growing, his knowledge expanded into manipulating skills, and even the art of disguise. However, he has a droll sense of humour. Despite being evil though, Robotnik is still human, as under his brutal demeanor lies a secretly sad and lonely man; when feeling left out on Christmas, he stated that he wished he had friends to celebrate it with. He also has a love of teen romance, and enjoys a good cup of steaming cocoa while reading it in bed.

Working for Paramount[]

Robotnik is a malevolent Overlander who has been described as "pure, unbridled evil" and a "psychological tire fire". Usually, he comes across as an assertive and self-confident person who does not let his convictions waver in the face others. However, his genius intellect makes him very narcissistic. Notably, he will declare himself the head of any operation he is involved on, voicing out his supposed superiority to those he comes across without hesitation or consideration, and viewing everyone else around him as inferior and basic. Arrogant and condescending, he thinks that the hardest thing about being "the smartest Overlander in the world is that everyone else is stupid". He similarly prides himself on his intellect and refuses to acknowledge surprise, instead falling back on the excuse that his movements of surprise do not count since he is "expecting not to expect something." These traits mainly stem from Robotnik's own severe inferiority complex which originate from childhood neglect. As a result, he sees himself as an insignificant speck, and yearns for acknowledgment and recognition. This often results in him bringing up personal accomplishments in order to make himself feel superior.

Robotnik is also characterized by his quite eccentric behavior. This includes sudden mood swings, mimicking robotic noises and movements, using large and complicated words in conversations to describe a simple situation, and dancing wildly to his own scenarios when he believes he is alone.

Robotnik is not one who tolerates failure and is very quick to lose his temper when it occurs, which prompts his violent mood swings. Lacking any concern about morality and collateral damage to boot, Robotnik is willing to do whatever it takes to accomplish his goals, as evidenced by the numerous lethal measures he took to capture Sonic and get rid of anyone helping him, and the destruction he caused to San Francisco and the Great Pyramids of Egypt. Despite his claims of wanting to improve the Earth, he is happily aware that he is "evil" and thus wishes to achieve improvement the way he envisions it, having for example put a label on his lab's light switch that says, "evil lab". He also has a large chip on his shoulder about being bullied as a child and hates being reminded of how he used to be at the mercy of unintelligent brutes.

Robotnik has also an incredibly sadistic streak, seizing any opportunity to inflict pain upon other people, and relishing every second of it. Notably, he would happily talk about how he wanted to dissect Sonic and "see what makes him tick", and smile as he threatened to kill Tom while interrogating him and reciting the US Code.

An egomaniacal and sociopathic misanthrope, Robotnik often voices his distaste for humanity, viewing humans beings as inefficient creatures of hubris and desire. Humans similarly bore the doctor to the state that he considers their lives meaningless and therefore he has no desire for having friends, which he is proud of not to have. Robotnik is similarly completely devoid of empathy for any lifeform, be they humans, mobians, or those in-between, being unable to understand why Tom would risk everything to help Sonic, and hunting Sonic in order dissect him for his own scientific inquiries. As such, Robotnik hates everybody around him, although he is shown to (barely) tolerate Agent Stone, whom he compliments for his lattes, albeit very aggressively. Interestingly enough however, despite Robotnik openly stating that he will not miss Agent Stone, he did create a stand-in of his lackey to keep him company on the Mushroom Planet. This may imply either that he does desire human company on some level, or that he just needs someone to abuse.

Owning to his hatred of humanity and being a staunch perfectionist, Robotnik values only robotics, which he sees as practical and functional since they always follow their programming and do what they are told. He is especially proud of his Badnik drones, which he displays affection for and praises them for being relentless and effective. In his own words, his machines are everything to him, and he considers them to be a part of the further evolution of mankind.

Over the course of his hunt for Sonic's power, Robotnik's sanity would degrade to the point where he became completely obsessed with obtaining Sonic's power by any means necessary, eventually becoming willing to place himself in life-threatening situations where he would fail to realize the danger until it was too late. After spending almost three months alone on the Mushroom Planet, his grip on sanity would degrade even further (despite his claims to the contrary), as he would talk to a stone as if it was a real person.

Abilities and Powers[]

Eggman is a brilliant scientist and inventor with seemingly limitless mastery over technology. His remarkable skills as an engineer and programmer are best evidenced by the armies of robots, machines and mechs he has created for his numerous schemes. He is also an incredibly skilled pilot: able to manipulate many different kinds of his own mechs, robots and vehicles in difficult battles with Sonic.

Eggman's most well known ability is his masterminded plots and schemes which only fail due to Sonic and his friends. He is a remarkable scientist and engineer, as evidenced by the numerous armies of robots and other mechanical inventions he has created. Eggman is an incredibly skilled pilot: able to swoop missiles and lasers in his Egg Mobile with skills rivaled only by Eggman Nega and Tails. Eggman commands the Egg Fleet, the Armada of Flying Battleships.

Eggman has considerable physical strength as seen in Sonic Lost World where he was able to shatter a large wall of ice with his bare hands, and in Sonic Riders, Eggman is classified as a Power Type, further implying a high level of strength for Eggman. As seen in some games' endings he is also quite resistant to damage, being catapulted or falling vast distances only to come out scratched up but mostly unharmed. Despite his physical structure, Eggman is also very athletic; this is seen in many of the 16-bit era games, where there is almost always a point where Sonic chases him and despite of his weight and Sonic's speed, he always manages to outrun his nemesis long enough to reach his next escape vehicle or weapon. In one cutscene of Sonic Lost World, Eggman is seen to be running at the same speed as Sonic.

History[]

Past[]

Early life[]

Dr. Robotnik began his existence as Julian Kintobor (ジュリアンキントボール, Juriankintobōru) from the House of Robotnik, born in the city of Station Square. Growing up Julian considered his older brother Colin "annoying", due to his teasing attitude and having him received more attention from their parents. He studied under the genius scientist, Professor Pickles R. for an extended period of time. Once his mentor passed unto him everything he knew, Julian conspired against Pickles and had him banished, allowing Julian full control of his laboratory.

During the breakout of the Great Sonic Pokemon War between the Mobians, Pokemons, and Humans, Julian worked as a high-profile weapons engineer for the Human armies at the request of the Ministry of Conflict, brainstorming the most sophisticated military hardware in history, including his first robot programmed with artificial intelligence, King Gong, and the creation of the first prototype of the Ultimate Annihilator, which would result in his death many years later. However, Julian's methods were put into question when it was revealed that he utilized live Overlander test subjects to perfect his weaponry. He was tried in court by the Minister of Justice, his own brother, and sentenced to ten years of imprisonment. This experience also weakened Colin and Julian's already strained relationship.

Capital of the World's Warlord[]

Sometime after his arrest, Julian somehow escaped confinement. After barely evading a death squad sent after him, Julian made it to the Badlands and found himself rescued by Jules and Sir Charles. The brothers brought him to the Kingdom of Acorn, where he was welcomed. In gratitude, Julian swore allegiance to King Nigel Acorn and pledged to impart inside knowledge on the Humans to turn the tide of the war. In addition to the Royal Family, a titled "Warlord" was charged with overseeing military matters. The Warlord at the time of Julian's arrival was a scheming Kodos Lion, who, despite his hatred for Humans, taught Julian everything about battlefield tactics. During a look over Walter Naugus' former residence, Kodos tried to take Julian under his wing in a plot to overthrow King Nigel, the Overlander thinks to try and rule Mobius. Kodos planned to stage a coup and send his enemies to the Zone of Silence. Julian was enamored by the idea of conquering the world, but decided he did not want to share power. Instead, he used the Atomic Mace, a weapon Naugus created, to knock out Kodos and banished him to the Zone of Silence. Following Kodos' "disappearance", Julian assumed the mantle of Warlord. He would later be aided by his wayward nephew, Colin Kintobor Jr. AKA Snively Robotnik.

Betrayal to Charles/Robotnik's Reign[]

Prior to the discovery of Sir Charles' Roboticizer, Lord Julian's schemes to take over the kingdom involved using an army of cyborgs. In order to experiment with the idea, Julian required suitable test subjects. Rather than use any of the Mobians within the main Kingdom, which may be noticed and thus reveal his schemes similar to what had happened with the Overlanders, Julian went to the neutral village of Erika where he proceeded to capture the local inhabitants, including Cream. Although he captured numerous villagers for test subjects, all of their bodies rejected the cybernetic implants and died, with the exception of Cream and Cheese. Julian, disappointed that only one specimen survived, nevertheless tested his cyborg on an attacking group of Overlanders. After Monkey Khan attacked them and single-handedly destroyed their tank, the Overlander troops retreated. Julian was impressed by Monkey Khan's success, but was forced to permanently confine him after Khan attempted to turn on him.

Following this, Julian discovered Sir Charles brilliant device: the Roboticizer. Initially believing it to be a threat to his plans, he then realized it could be used to his advantage. With his plans for a cyborg army scrapped, Julian decided he could convert Mobians entirely to robotic slaves. After secretly sabotaging the device so that those roboticized would become mindless drones that obeyed only his commands, Jules Hedgehog became his first victim.

Some time later, Julian arranged for both the Overlorder and King Nigel to decide the outcome of the Great War over a sword duel. In reality, the duel was designed to make Julian's plans of global domination easier, with at least one of his enemies supposed to die in the fight. If the Overlord won, Julian planned on simply taking command of the Mobians and leading them into a never-ending war. If King Nigel won, the Overlord would be killed and the Overlanders would surrender, removing a major power and enabling Julian to take over the Kingdom of Acorn from within. When King N. won the fight but decided not to slay the Overlord, Julian at first believed his plans to be foiled. However, Sir Charles, still blaming himself for what happened to his brother and sister-in-law, turned over the Roboticizer to Julian, which he realized he could use to enslave the Mobians. As a result of these losses, Sir Charles left the field of science to raise his nephew, while Julian's treachery went undetected.

Shortly after the Great War's end, King Nigel agreed to Julian's plans to "dismantle" the military, also ending his title as Warlord and promoting him to the Minister of Science, all of which would be presented at a victory ceremony. Before the ceremony took place, Julian's plans to overthrow the kingdom were discovered by Amadeus Prower on the day of his son's birth. However, he too was subjected to the roboticizer before he could warn anyone. That evening, Julian gave Snively the order to begin the attack. Hordes of SWATbots struck various points simultaneously throughout Mobotropolis, virtually halting any resistance, while also rounding up the citizens for roboticization. Changing his name from Julian Kintobor to Dr. Julian Ivo Robotnik (after his grandfather and ancestral house), he transformed the once beautiful capital city of Mobotropolis into an industrial wasteland he dubbed Robotropolis. Robotnik's most symbolic victory was exiling King Nigel Acorn into the Zone of Silence, securing his position as ruler.

Shortly after his capture of Mobotropolis, Robotnik found himself facing a resistance group known as the Freedom Fighters. The group used guerilla warfare, sabotage and hit-and-run tactics to disrupt Robotnik's rule, raiding his factories for supplies and destroying them to prevent them from being used again. Over time, the Original Freedom Fighters proved quite successful in damaging the infrastructure of Robotnik's empire. However, after promising one of their members, Trey Scales, power and wealth in exchange for betraying his comrades, Robotnik managed to lure the whole group into a trap, roboticizing them and sending them into the Zone of Silence. This quelled local resistance until the rise of the Knothole Freedom Fighters.

Following this success, Robotnik became interested in exploring the Zone of Silence. Upon entering the zone using his Egg Mobile, the doctor was ambushed by Feist and brought before the zone's ruler: Walter Naugus. Realizing that Naugus had absolute control over the zone, Robotnik quickly escaped from the zone with Snively's help with the intent to never return.

Following this mishap, the tyrant then focused his attention on consolidating control of the rest of the planet. Soon enough, he had nearly all of inhabited Sonic's world under his thumb; only a selected few managed to hide from his expanding reach. He would continue to rule the Pokemon World with an iron fist, with his loyal robotic henchmen and his lackeys, Snively and Crabmeat. Robotnik then lead an army of SWATbots to the Overland to enslave his species, only to see Megaopolis deserted. As time went on, Robotnik disseminated various regional governors across the planet called "Sub-Bosses" to enforce his will and to lead campaigns against local rebels, such as Aldith in the Kingdom of Mercia, who successfully crushed the Crazy Kritter Freedom Fighters, Regina Ferrum and Jun Kun in the Dragon Kingdom, Jessie and James in the Mobian Ocean, and perhaps the most dangerous one Crocbot in Downunda, who managed to enslave much of the local population. Robotnik would even try expanding his rule to a galactic scale.

A worthy adversary, Sonic T. Hedgehog[]

Sonic the Hedgehog was a long-time enemy of Robotnik during his reign. As a child, Sonic had encountered Robotnik before, while he was still Warlord - a young Sonic used to play with Princess Sally in the palace, since his father and uncle were officers and advisors to the King. After Robotnik took power, a young Princess Sally and the rest of the future Freedom Fighters were taken (as children) out of Mobotropolis and hidden by their elders in the Great Forest.

Sonic took an immediate dislike to the belligerent Robotnik. Sonic's Uncle Chuck, who operated a chili dog stand and raised Sonic like a son, was eventually captured by Robotnik's SWATbots and roboticized. Sonic recklessly tried to break Chuck out of Robotropolis all by himself, but once he saw that Chuck was a mindless robot, Sonic realized he could not help him. Inspired by the Original Freedom Fighters, Sonic and Sally formed their own rebel group after the original's demise, known as the Knothole Freedom Fighters.

Robotnik would launch several plots to destroy the Freedom Fighters - especially Sonic - particularly in his last year of power. These plots included using the robotic-plant Krudzu to spread and destroy the Great Forest, creating the "Exceptionally Versatile Evolvanoid" E.V.E. to destroy Sonic, the use of the Weather Annihilator to flush out any resistance, using an amnesia-ridden Sonic to defeat the Freedom Fighters, the use of Combots to locate Knothole, and sending supplies to Crocbot in Downunda to quell the local Freedom Fighter cell. All of these attempts proved futile however.

At one point, Robotnik nearly managed to achieve victory over Sonic and the Knothole Freedom Fighters. With the help of escaped convict Nack the Weasel, Robotnik managed to capture and roboticize his nemesis, making him the powerful and subservient Robian. While Mecha Sonic managed to destroy a large portion of Knothole Village, he was prevented from providing its location when Mecha Knuckles attacked him. Ultimately, Robotnik's plan backfired when the two Robians collided into Robotropolis, turning it into nuclear slag. Sonic was restored to his organic self shortly afterwards by his One Billionth Power Ring, while Knuckles used the de-roboticizer.

Following the Mecha Sonic disaster, Robotnik set to work on his next big scheme - the Death Egg; a powerful, orbital battle station capable of roboticizing the entire planet. Robotnik boarded his vessel upon its completion, leaving the rebuilding of Robotropolis to his nephew Snively, who instead used the SWATbot labour force to pamper him. Although nearly successful in sinking the Floating Island, the Death Egg was ultimately destroyed by Sonic and Tails.

After suffering numerous setbacks and having all of his plans foiled, Robotnik was furious. After King Max was rescued from the Zone of Silence, Robotnik tracked a powerful neutron energy reading, finally locating Knothole in the process. He finally developed his ultimate scheme, Operation: EndGame.
